Interior crown molding corners are a common trouble spot. Mitered joints seem straightforward, but over time, they often develop cracks and gaps as wood expands and contracts. You can also use a rotary tool with a cutoff wheel to make relief cuts, then follow with the coping saw. The key is to work slowly—one wrong cut can ruin the piece. But once you master it, the result is a seamless wrap that looks like one continuous band.
My advice: if you’re a beginner, start with a simple cove profile. It’s forgiving and gives you immediate feedback. As you gain confidence, tackle more complex shapes.
Once the cope fits, secure the piece. Apply a thin bead of polyurethane adhesive to the back of the coped area, then press into place. Use 2-inch finish nails at the top and bottom of the piece, driven near the ceiling and at the wall. A pin nailer can hold it while adhesive dries, but standard finish nails are fine.
After nailing, wipe off any excess adhesive with a damp cloth. Do not rely on caulk to fill gaps at the joint. A well-fitted cope needs no caulk.
